Trends Are Not Spikes

Why a single-day jump rarely deserves a trend label—and what to watch instead.

A spike asks for triage. A trend asks for patience and a comparison window. Teams that treat every spike as a trend burn attention on noise and miss the slower bends that actually change retention.

Start with a question: does this movement persist across cohorts and days of week, or does it vanish when you exclude a campaign weekend? If it vanishes, keep it on an incident list—not a strategy deck.

Behavioral trend monitoring earns its keep when you name the habit that is shifting, not the chart that is loudest.
